The City of Portage operates a comprehensive snow removal program each winter to ensure the maximum degree of safety to the motoring public. There are 219 miles of city streets to plow in Portage which are prioitized for snowplowing operations according to how heavy the streets are traveled. Of course the intensity of a winter storm dictates how quickly streets can be plowed and every effort is made to keep streets as clear as possible.
As a reminder, plowing, shoveling or blowing snow, ice or slush onto or across roadways or highways is prohibited by State Law (Act 82 of 1978, Vehicle Code 257.677a), as it can present a serious traffic hazard. In addition, snow should not be piled so that it obstructs the view of motorists. Please contact the Police Department at 329-4552 to report concerns about snow being deposited back into the roadway. For concerns regarding visual obstructions caused by snow piles, please contact the Department of Transportation and Utilities at 329-4422.
Snow Removal - Sidewalks
The City of Portage Code of Ordinances requires residents and businesses to maintain the sidewalks adjacent to their properties. Sidewalks are to be cleared of snow within 24 hours of a snow event and cleared of ice within 12 hours of an event which causes ice to form. Please contact the Department of Community Development at 329-4477, or by
email if you have questions or concerns regarding the maintenance of city sidewalks during the winter months.
